Am I Safe Online?

Online trading and investing offers a prime opportunity for those savvy with finances to bring in a little or better yet, a lot of money. It is convenient to be able to check shares, trade or buy stocks and fill out an investment portfolio. With the ability to make a wealth of money online, there is also the equal risk of losing money online.

It is essential that precautions are taken to limit the risks involved with online investing.

Your first concern with online investing is security. You need to be sure your private personal and financial information stays just that—private. Do not ever use a public computer (i.e. a library, internet café, or even a friend’s house) to do any financial work. Resist even the smallest desire to keep tabs on your account or log in while in public. The best way to help keep your investments secure is to only use your personal computer.

Next always ensure the website you are using to do your online trading have a URL that begins with “https.” Other websites without this prefix are not always credible. Also be sure that there is a locked padlock icon showing in your window browser. This is also further evidence that any financial transactions you do are done so privately and safely.

Before answering any emails which speak of changing passwords or updating an account, actually call the investment company yourself and verify the email. Most online companies do not contact you through an email that requires you to disclose personal information online. They may email an alert or call, but in each of these cases, it requires you to make contact with the company.

Remembering these tips will help you avoid the antics of hackers and scammers who try to imitate, deceive, or just plain “steal” identities or financial information. Stay safe, be smart, and invest well. Online investing can be done safely and successfully. Just make wise, careful choices.
