If you have decided to try online investing for the convenience or the ability to eliminate the middleman in your investment decisions, it’s important to follow some basic cautions. In addition to website glitches and inaccurate information that can hamper your investing experience, you could also place your most important personal information (Social Security and bank account numbers) at risk.

Choose a reputable online investment firm. If you have found a company that offers fantastic transaction rates and that claims to provide more than their competition, but you have never heard of them before, pay attention to this red flag. You should always verify their legitimacy by checking with your state’s securities regulation agency, which maintains records of licenses and securities registration information. Expert con artists can clone professional-looking websites for the sole purpose of capturing your personal information. They may also have sub-par security and encryption technology, making it easy to compromise your personal data.

Make sure you can reach the customer service number by phone, in case you have a problem and are unable to access the internet. Try calling before sharing any personal information, especially if you feel uncomfortable. Is it easy to reach a human, or are you redirected endlessly through a complicated phone tree? Skimping on customer service means they probably don’t value their clients very highly. If the lack of response makes you feel uncomfortable, move on.

Take information received from emails and dubious websites with a grain of salt. Scam artists and unscrupulous people are very good a generating an artificial “buzz” with the intent to attract buyers. The problem is that the attention is not legitimate and has nothing to do with how the company is performing. This applies to both trading firms and investment opportunities. Any company that resorts to these measures is not worth your time.
